What do you do about coverups at the beach? I usually stick to nike runnings and a tank, but was looking for something a little preppier/cuter. Any ideas? Thanks!

how would a 'preppy' person go about a casual day at school? this week, my school is allowing some casual days, when you're free to wear sweatpants and flip-flops and such (these things are usually against the dress code). if i don't want to wear sweatpants, what would you suggest wearing to still have a comfortable, casual and preppy vibe?

I’d wear chino shorts and a fun blouse tucked in with a belt!

how old were you when you had your first kiss?

Eep.  A week after my 18th birthday! I had a crush on the guy throughout the entire summer and finally had the courage to let him kiss me!  And then we dated… and lived happily ever after… for approximately three months.  Ha.  (We’re still friends though!)

Hey Carly! It's getting warm up here in Massachusetts (finally!) and I was wondering where you find such cute sundresses? I'm looking for something light that I can just throw on and go. Thank you so much, I love your blog!

J. Crew dresses are my weakness!!!  Light and comfortable are my only two requirements when I’m buying a dress specifically for summer.  I like to just “throw them on.”

Vineyard Vines always has a few casual dresses… I’m loving this dress!  And, lastly…. Target has great dresses when you just want something cheap and simple!

Hey Carly! So I've always been a prep and I just found your blog and lovee it! Im going to Siena College next year in NY and my biggest worry is losing my style, not only just clothes wise but also dorm wise...the dorms are...alrite... but its the typical white walls boring dorm room...any suggestions on how to decorate?

Decorating for dorms is fun!  I would definitely check out sheets by Tommy Hilfiger.  I have three sets and love them.  If you get a solid sheet set, you may want to consider bringing it to your local embroidery place and getting them monogrammed!

I would have fun with the bedding, but stick to a basic color scheme for the most part.  Don’t worry about loading up on “accessories” for your room… more stuff=less room.

You can see my dorms from Freshman and Sophomore years!

Hi Carly! I really like the different clothes Zara has, but I don't have a Zara store near where I live. I tried to see if there was a way to shop online but couldn't seem to find a way to. Do you buy your Zara clothes in stores or do you buy them online somehow? Thanks!! xoxo!

No online shopping :(  Luckily for me, there’s a store in Tampa and Georgetown.  It’s definitely a place you should check to see if a town you’re vacationing in has one!

I look forward to reading Prep Talk every Sunday! Are there any opportunities to write for it/become involved?? xoxo

Hi!!!  Right now, with just the newsletter, no.  But go ahead and send an email to preptalk.mail@gmail.com and I’ll send an “application.”  Basically, you just write a mock column.

There is a website for Prep Talk in the works, and I’m going to need weekly contributors when the site is closer to launching!!!

So definitely shoot an email over to the Prep Talk address and your name will be kept in consideration for future plans :) xo

Reader Question - Preppy Staples, Part 2

Love the ideas :)

preppywithatwist:

I recently received this question from a reader named Paola…

I’m a sophomore in high school and I am going to attend a new school next year which is a lot bigger than my school now. I wanted to change up my style a little bit and go for the preppy look. Right now my style is somewhere between prep and hipster, mostly I just shop at places like Forever 21 and the Gap. But lately I’ve fallen in LOVE with the preppy look. I’ve been looking online a lot and J Crew, LL Bean and Anthropologie are my favorites so far, but I don’t know where to start!? So what do you think are the main essentials that I should have?

Thanks, Paola, for writing! I answered a similar question regarding preppy staples for the fall season, but I thought I’d give you some more ideas for the warm weather months. Even though you’re on a student’s budget, keep in mind here is that preppy style is classic - you’re investing in some items you’ll use for years and will never go out of style.  I included practical purchases as well as a couple of lustworthy inspiration pieces.

1. Seersucker and Madras

These classic fabrics are the most cheerful way to dress for sunshine. Plus, patchwork madras and naturally wrinkled seersucker will travel well on weekend getaways —no need to iron to look polished.

Hi Carly! I am a loyal College Prep follower, and I love your blog. I am going to study abroad this summer in Costa Rica and I really want to keep a blog so that my family and friends can follow my trip. I read your earlier post that your replied to someone about how to start a blog, but my question is how do you find unique backgrounds (such as your beautiful lilly one)...and the bigger question - I couldn't figure out how to apply it to my blog. Thanks! Happy Summer :)

If you’re on Blogger, you click “Design” on your dashboard and you can do all sorts of design features.  If you’re on tumblr, some themes allow for backgrounds, find out when you click “Appearance” if it’s an option.

I got my background from the lady who designed my blog, but I think you can do a simple google search (i.e. “free blogger backgrounds”) and pick one out you like!

Why don't you show your shoes in your OOTD?..

Sometimes I’m not actually even wearing them- you know, just sitting at my desk working.  But really, it’s hard to get a full body shot with just photobooth! hah
