chelsey-currently asked: I love your blog first off and was amazed to find out you were a coxswain for a while. I wanted to ask a few questions if it is not to much trouble. What is something that really helped you get respect from your rowers? Something that you wish you knew early on? What is something you did/wore to still feel girly while coxing (because yelling like a man does not help)? Also any other advice or tips you can give me. Thanks!
I rowed for a year before I started coxing. So that most definitely helped. I also tried to set boundaries. For example, I was definitely in “coxswain mode” at the boathouse, on the water, and at regattas. But I would be fun and normal (aka not bossy) when we weren’t practicing or racing.
And I pretty much never felt girly… I was generally pretty focused on racing and had a million other things going on to worry about that.
