It depends, but I would say that for the most part Lilly shorts tend to be smaller. They definitely have a different “cut.” Where J. Crew has a little roomier and relaxed feel, Lilly shorts are more fitting. (Which is why you may feel more comfortable in a larger size.) I think it’s probably something you should test.

I’d suggest ordering a pair from Zappos.com if you don’t have access to an actual store that sells Lilly. They offer free one day shipping and free returns. So you could order a couple pairs (and have them the next day) and return the ones that don’t fit.
